Historic U.S. Fires, 1871-2003: General Slocum Steamship

Fires that had lasting impact

NYC's worst disaster until 9-11

More than 1,000 picnickers, mostly women and children, died after fire broke out on the General Slocum thanks to a tragedy of errors including disintegrating life jackets and fire hoses. Witnesses later testified that the ship had never held a fire drill and that the life boats were pinned to the ship.
