Historic U.S. Fires, 1871-2003: Hotel Vendome

Fires that had lasting impact

Boston's deadliest LODD death toll

The fire was under control when five stories on the southeast corner of the building collapsed, burying a ladder truck and 17 firefighters. Officials stopped all firefighting efforts to concentrate on digging in the debris. Eight firefighters were rescued. The collapse was attributed to a steel column that was already overloaded by the renovations then in progress at the hotel. The extra weight of the firefighters and the water already pumped into the hotel caused it to collapse.
