Hurricanes are a subset of tropical cyclones, rotating low-pressure weather systems that begin over tropical oceans. These storms become hurricanes--also known as cyclones or typhoons-- when sustained wind speeds reach or exceed 74 miles and hour. According to the World Meteorological Organization, they are the second most deadly natural disaster after earthquakes.
NETC Library collects materials on hurricanes to support students at the Emergency Management Institute and the National Fire Academy and for practitioners in the fields of fire, emergency medical services, and emergency management.
