Residential fire sprinklers were not required by all model building codes until the International Code Council included them in its 2009 edition. The requirement has resulted in a wide variety of anti-sprinkler legislation and lobbying efforts. To date, sprinklers are mandated in only two states: California and Maryland while Massachusetts and New York State have partial mandates and some states have given municipalities permission to mandate them.
